I really appreciate the quality of education at UMD, especially within the Business School. The class formats are very inclusive and match my learning style very well, which makes a big impact on my educational journey. I especially appreciate the smaller class sizes, and how accessible the professors are to help you succeed throughout your time at UMD.
The size of the University matched exactly what I was looking for in a school. While I appreciate larger campuses such as the Twin Cities campus at the University of Minnesota, I wanted a slightly smaller campus that allows for more of a sense of community. At the same time, I also did not want a campus so small that I would miss out on opportunities to meet new people and discover opportunities. UMD is the perfect balance between the two.
I love the location of UMD for two main reasons. First, I love the city of Duluth for its nature, with easy access to Lake Superior, hiking, mountain biking, and all of the other outdoor activities it has to offer. Second, I feel that it is the perfect distance from where I grew up. I wanted to be far enough from home that I could have many new opportunities, but not so far that it would be a large burden to visit family. Duluth is the perfect distance in my opinion.
Whether you're on campus, at home, or out and about, you are practically guaranteed to have a great view. From Lake Superior, to the city lights, to the endless forests, you are always going to have a great view. My personal favorites include sunsets and sunrises over lake superior, and the occasional norhtern lights appearance.
The city of Duluth is the perfect balance between big city and small town. It is big enough to have the infrastructure benefits of a large city - plenty of places to eat, shop and and have a fun time. Additionally, it is small enough to have a good sense of community, and to still be close to local nature areas - no need to go far!
This photo is taken from the atrium of the Kathryn A. Martin Library on campus. This is a very calm and quiet study spot with great views!
Park point is a long stretch of beack along Lake Superior, just across the lift bridge. It is a very popular spot during the warmer months, however, the water stays cold year round.
Gooseberry falls is located just north of Duluth, and is a beatiful park. There are many different falls to explore and hike, and it is a great stop if you're in the area!
The northern lights are often visible over Duluth. Whether you're out in a dark area, or even just in your backyard, you have pretty high chances of seeing the northern lights! This photo was taken on my back porch!
Overall, my experience at UMD has been amazing. The community is great and overall very welcoming, and there are endless opportunities to meet new people and experience new things. No matter where you go on campus, there is almost always an amazing view of the lake, or the various treelines. Additionally, there is plenty of outdoor activities in the area, including hiking in Bagley Nature Area, UMD's very own nature park.
